It all goes awry when Mary (a character based on several women from semi-popular culture including the Magic Momma from Frank Zappa's Camarillo Brillo) insists that Stephen get stoned in order to have new age astral tantric sex. Things go awry when he tries to stumble out an explanation of why he can't really smoke pot because of this bet with his daughter. The music in this scene was particularly challenging to write (and play) because of the collision of the straight-eighths world and the swing-eighths world.
